PETERSBURG, Feb. 6-A new treatment for leprosy, which for the first time is able to control previously hopeless cases, was reported today by a University of Minnesota researcher.

Dr. Soo-Duk Lim said the therapy, which makes use of the new medical field of cellular engineering, produced dramatic improvement in drug resistant leprosy patients. Reporting at a special meetsing on immunology sponsored by National FoundationMarch of Dimes, Dr. Lim showed pictures of previously incurable patients in whom the skin sores cleared up and in whom the existence of the bacteria that causes leprosy could no longer be found. THE TREATMENT opens up a hopeful new approach to treating leprosy which now affects 15 to 20 million persons in the world, said Dr.

Robert A. Good, president and director of the Memorial Sloan-Ket- Ronald Kotulak I tering Cancer Center in New York City. Altho many cases of leprosy are controllable thru the use of antibiotic drugs, a significant number are resistant to these agents. "This is a very exciting development that shows a great deal of promise," Dr. Good said.

Dr. Lim reported that the new treatment is effective against lepromatous leprosy, the most severe. form, and against tuberculoid leprosy, a milder form. IN THE TREATMENT, white blood cells were taken from Koreans who were found to have a natural immunity to the leprosy bacteria. Once a week for eight to 16 weeks, a patient received an infusion of these white blood cells from a different donor.

"Repeated infusions of allogenetic leucocytes dramatically brought about improvement in the clinical status of the patients," Dr. Lim said. The treatment was tried on 13 patients at the University of Minnesota and all recovered and were able to go home, he said. Fenger student dies playing basketball By Jerry Crimmins "COME ON, Theo, you can play some more." But Theo Littles, 6 feet 2, 220 pounds, and 15 years old, could not play anymore. Nor could he hear his friends.

During a basketball game in gym class at Fenger High School yesterday afternoon, Theo leaped to take a shot and collapsed and died. "The boys moved his arms because they thought he was said Dr. Leo Dillon, principal of the school at 11220 S. Wallace St. A teacher gave the youth mouth to mouth resuscitation.

But the teacher's efforts, and the efforts of the Chicago Fire Department to revive him failed. The youth was pronounced dead from "unknown causes" at Roseland Community Hospital. "HE WAS A JOY to me and his mother, an all-around guy. You couldn't ask for a better son," his father, Theo Littles 35, said last night in the family home at 10719 S. Prairie Av.

Theo Sr. and Mary Littles have three other children, two daughters, Cheryl, 13, and Marnita, 10; and a son, Eric, 8. "He was very outgoing, very intelligent and just a lot of fun. Since he was 12, he wanted to be a doctor," the father said. The father, an appliance repairman, added: "Theo got weights for Christmas.

He wanted to build himself up to try out for the Fenger football team in the fall." Waited 11 hours Car stalls, no one stops, he kills self GREEN RIVER, Feb. 6 25-year-old man killed himself after leaving a note saying his car stalled in zero weather and no motorists would stop to help him, police say. "I have been waiting 11 hours for someone to stop," said the note found next to the body of David Huffstetler of Salt Lake City. "I can't stand the cold any longer and they just keep passing by." HIGHWAY PATROLMAN Darrell Frye said he found the body of Huffstetler early Sunday seven miles west of here along Int. Hwy.

80. Frye said the car was out of gas and in the parking lane of the highway. Sweetwater County Sheriff John Zakovich said Huffstetler shot himself in the head with a .22 caliber pistol. Authorities said Huffstetler had been working as a guard at a chemical plant west of Green River. Living faith By Harold Blake Walker THE PHILOSOPHY OF the New Testament centers in the notion of extravagant self-giving.

It keeps hammering on the theme: Love, do good, and lend a hand "expecting nothing in return." It is clear, however, that "expecting nothing in return" has compensations that are unexpected. "'He who loses his life for My sake," Jesus said, "shall find it," and vice versa, as if in the economy of God, if not in the secular order, we gain by self-giving and win by losing. and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put in your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get In the light of the New Testament, it is obvious that the ordinary is inadequate. The question of Jesus keeps pressing to the fore: "What do you more?" "If you love those who love you" it isn't enough.

"Even sinners" do that. IT IS ALTOGETHER normal for us to love our children and our husbands or wives. We find it easy enough to love our friends if they have an affection for us. But it requires at least a little madness in us to love "those who despitefully use" us. We need grace to be fools for Christ's sake in the impersonal world of automation and conflict.

Two words are used incessantly by sociologists and psychologists to describe contemporary life: alienation and hostility. In a world of the impersonal it is incredibly easy to be both alienated and hostile. Every time we get behind the wheels of our automobiles, especially in heavy traffic, I dare say we become victims of alienation and hostility. Every driver on the street or highway becomes an enemy. It will be a great day when we begin to love our enemies on the expressway at the rush hour.

When we are tempted to be satisfied with the ordinary that requires little of us, stab us awake, 0' God, to the possibilities of life committed to the best we know. Amen.
