22 Best Copenhagen Instagram Spots For The Best Photos

From castles, gardens, and stunning architecture–here are my top Copenhagen Instagram spots. after spending an entire summer gallivanting around Copenhagen, and more from my most recent trip.

Classic Copenhagen Photo Spots

These ARE the must see spots, and the quintessential places to take photos. If you can only squeeze in a few, this is where you absolutely need to go!

1. Nyhavn Houses

As one of the most recognizable areas of Copenhagen, Nyhavn is known for its colorful houses and restaurants that sit right along a canal. This waterfront is rich in history dating back to the 17th century and continues being an iconic site to take pictures in front of the rows of brightly painted houses.

For fans of Hans Christian Andersen (aka the Danish author of classic fairytales like The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling and The Princess & The Pea) there is a souvenir shop called Hans Christian Andersen Copenhagen at Nyhavn 18 where he lived in the 1800s!

Probably the most popular of the Instagrammable places with the coloured houses similar to the Painted Ladies in San Francisco!

Plus, they have some of the top restaurants in Copenhagen and a favorite of ours is Vaffelbageren Nyhavn where you can enjoy a delicious Belgian waffle topped with ice cream on the boardwalk with the view of Nyhavn houses right in front!

2. Rosenborg Castle

Located right in the city center, Rosenborg Castle is home to the Danish Crown Jewels and regalia. Guided tours of the castle are paid, but the King’s Garden of Roses is completely free to visit and makes for the most Instagrammable backdrop.

3. Amalienborg Plaza

Amalienborg is the home of the Danish royal family. It’s no surprise that the home of one of the oldest monarchies is absolutely stunning with beautiful domes, columns, and a grand fountain that is the perfect place to take pictures that will make you look like royalty.

4. The Little Mermaid Statue

As one of the most recognizable symbols of Copenhagen, you can’t miss the famous statue inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s story. The statue sits by the water at Langelinie Pier and is always surrounded by a crowd, so try to go early if you want a clear picture of her. A reminder of a heartbreaking story in a dreamy city, this is the perfect spot to capture Copenhagen’s beautiful waters.

Hidden Gems Beyond the Tourist Draws

If you want to be that girl whose followers are DMing you like WHERE IS THAT?! These spots are for you!

5. Niels Hemmingsens Gade

Another scenic street known for its colorful houses is Niels Hemmingsens Gade located in Old Town Copenhagen. While more lowkey than Nyhavn, the charming blend of the older and more modern architecture dubs it as one of the most instagrammable spots in Copenhagen.

6. View from the Top of the Church of Our Saviour

We love free activities when it comes to traveling (here’s my guide for Copenhagen on a budget) and one of my favorite budget activities is visiting the Church of Our Saviour.

While it’s free to visit the church, it does cost $10 to climb the golden spire. Be warned, it’s a steep trek up the winding stairs, but the view from the top is absolutely breathtaking and you can see all of Copenhagen from up there!

7. The Lakes

The Lakes is composed of three rectangular lakes found in the Western city of the City Centre. Popular amongst bikers, runners, and walkers, the reflections on The Lakes beautifully mirror the sky and buildings.

This is the perfect spot for people watching and would make for an Instagram-worthy backdrop, especially during sunset when the golden rays are reflecting off of the water’s surface.

8. Marmorkirken

Marmorkirken, aka the Marble Church or Frederick’s Church, is one of my must see sights in my 3-day Copenhagen itinerary. Marmorkirken is recognizable by its huge copper green dome and the rest of the church is just as impressive.

The stunning exterior of the church would make for a great photo spot, but if you have ten minutes to spare, I recommend popping in (entry is free + there’s no dress code) to truly appreciate the beauty of the dome’s interior.

9. Botanical Garden Stairs

Escape the bustle of the city by visiting the Botanical Garden, Denmark’s largest collection of living plants that include rare trees and shrubbery. Botanical gardens are one of my favorite places to visit when visiting a new city because of how photogenic and serene they always are.

If you visit during the summer, there is even a butterfly house that’ll allow you to get up and close to the beautiful creatures.

The most Instagrammable spot is the Palm House, which is accessible by walking up a narrow 16 meters spiral staircase. Perhaps not the best for those afraid of heights, but with the light shining through the glass ceiling, it sure does make for some really neat pics.

10. Tivoli Gardens

Tivoli Gardens is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world and is also the magical playground that inspired Hans Christian Andersen and Walt Disney. Unlike your typical amusement park, you’ll also find beautiful architecture, gardens, and buildings next to all the fun rides.

At night, the park lights up in a dazzling display that truly feels like you’ve stepped into one of Disney’s magical stories. Of course, there are also thrilling roller coasters for some extra fun!

11. Island Brygge

Go for a harbor swim at Island Brygge, one of Copenhagen’s famous harbor baths! This harborfront is a hot spot for swimmers and kayakers to lay out in the sun or take a dip in the cool waters.

The surrounding area is also uniquely characterized by older buildings from its dockland past in the 1880s that share space with the modern architecture. The cobblestone streets, grassy fields, and glistening waters make for the picture perfect spot for any sunny day.

If you’re interested in checking out the rest of Copenhagen’s best harbor baths, here is a list of the best spots for swimming and cold plunges.

12. Christiansborg Palace

Christiansborg Palace is one of the most ornate palaces I’ve ever seen and serves as both a royal palace and a government building for the Danish Parliament. Some of the rooms and salons are even still used by the Royal Family.

Take a tour through the reception rooms, royal kitchens, tower, and appreciate the gilded Neo-Baroque style of the early 20th century.

13. Nyboder

You’ll find rows and rows of yellow houses in the historic district of Nyboder. Once built by King Christian IV to serve as Naval barracks for families of the navy, these homes have withstood centuries of change. The repetitive nature of the yellow houses would make for a cool monochromatic background in your photos.

14. Østerbro

Any area in the cute district of Østerbro looks like it was pulled straight out of Pinterest. Known as the greenest neighborhood in Copenhagen, enjoy a day strolling or biking in this family-friendly haven.

15. Reffen

Reffen is a street market open every day with tons of colorful food stalls. This market is known for promoting start-ups and innovation by enforcing “reduce and recycle.” This is such a creative blend of over 50 start-up stalls selling food, bars, and workshops. Hip and vibrant, you’ll be sure to take some delicious looking photos here!

16. Kastellet

Kastellet, aka The Citadel, is one of Northern Europe’s best-preserved fortresses. Constructed by King Christian IV in the 17th century, Kastellet takes the shape of the star and is the home to many buildings including the Citadel Church. Also doubling as a park, Kastellet is probably most recognizable by its red windmill, the perfect spot to take photos in front of.

The Wild Cards

Theses wild card photo spots are a little more unique. Not your typical travel photo, but some of my faves and definitely worth checking out!!

17. Thomas Dambo Trolls

Going troll hunting for Thomas Dambo Trolls is one of the most unique and fun experiences in Copenhagen and one that I highly recommend doing. While it’s not always easy to reach the locations without a car, I have a handy guide that has all my best troll hunting tips and locations for anyone visiting the city that’s interested in finding some of the 47 wooden trolls created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo.

Each troll is unique to one other and is oftentimes found in very unique settings or posed in super fun ways. One of my fav trolls is Kaptajin Nalle, which features a troll with sticks for a beard and pulling a boat!

18. Hotel Danmark

While looking for places to stay in the city, check out Hotel Danmark, a cute boutique hotel with a rooftop bar that has great views. The rooftop terrace is modern and chic with comfy lounge chairs and lush greenery that creates the perfect ambiance while enjoying a drink with some of the best views of the city. This is just one of the beautiful hotels in the city and I have a full list of the best hotels in Copenhagen here.

19. On a GoBoat

Take a break from walking and rent a private GoBoat for a sailing trip past Nyhavn, Amalienborg Palace, Paper Island, Christiania, and the Royal Opera House. We had the most romantic sunset cruise with our friends and it was the perfect way to explore the city. Copenhagen is very much a water/canal-centered city and renting a boat was such a unique and authentic way to experience the city.

GoBoats are also great because they’re solar-powered and can fit up to eight people – perfect for a large group of friends. It’s also great for international visitors because no license is required!

20. Copenhot

Copenhot is the largest outdoor spa in Denmark known for their fire-heated hot tubs, saunas, and cold plunges. You’ll be enjoying a natural hot tub experience whilst in an urban setting like an old ship yard.

You can book a private hot tub for you and your friends or participate in HotDay, a unique social experience where you’ll get to meet locals and tourists while soaking in a tub and enjoying a glass of wine.

21. Superkilen Park

Superkilen is a public urban park that aims to bring the community together with food, music, and sitting areas. This park is a standout because it combines the urban with artistic touches like the super fun squiggly lines on the pavement and thoughtful open spaces that attract skateboarders.

With fountains, swings, and benches from every corner of the world, Superkilen is the perfect example of thoughtful design in a public space.

22. Christianshavn Boat Rental & Café

If you’re looking for a unique dining experience, check out Christianshavn Boat Rental & Café. This cafe and music venue has a floating dock on the canal so you can sit by the water with drinks!

Secret Hidden Gems + 22 Best Copenhagen Instagram Spots (29)

The coolest part is that it’s also a boat rental and you can enjoy a nice meal by the water while watching the boats pass by. The open pub concept is the perfect place to relax outside on a warm day or head inside the cozy cabin when winds get chilly.

Quick Pro Tips for Taking the Best Instagram Photos

And here are some quick tips for taking the best Instagram photos in Copenhagen, and really anywhere! As a long-time pro photographer, these are always the first things I look for especially when fitting in a photoshoot between sightseeing.

  1. Consider what kind of mood and lighting you want in your photos. I love waking up super early so I can snag photos without the crowds, but sunset/golden hour is a good time of day because the light makes the image feel warm and ethereal.
  2. Have a subject of interest in your photos. While you could technically be the main focus in your photos, it’s important to consider what’s in the background. That’s why fun and colorful backgrounds make for interesting shots. You could also choose to pose next to an object like a statue or fountain for more variety.
  3. Shoot photos using the rule of thirds. This will create a balance between the subject (whether that be you or another object) and the elements in the background.
  4. Make fun poses! Photos don’t always have to be super poised or “picture perfect” even though the end result may appear to be. Some of my favorite photos are candids from times my friends have taken a photo with me unawares. Just remember to have fun and soak in the beautiful surroundings around you.

Important Note: Remember that each location may have different rules and customs from those that you are used to in your hometown. Places like Freetown Christiania actually discourage visitors from taking photos or talking on the phone for safety reasons. It’s important to do some research about each neighborhood you visit to keep yourself and those around you safe!

We also recommend getting a Copenhagen Card, which will grant you free access to many of the top attractions mentioned, as well as unlimited transportation.
